Pulitzer Prizes: Denver Post Wins for Aurora Theater Shooting Coverage
Other winners included the Sun Sentinel in Florida for the Public Service Award and The New York Times in four categories.
The 97th annual Pulitzer Prizes, the highest honor for newspaper journalism, announced that the Denver Post won in the Breaking News category for its reporting on the Aurora, Colo., movie theater shooting in July.
The Post was awarded for multimedia coverage of the news and awarded $10,000 for "using journalistic tools, from Twitter and Facebook to video and written reports, both to capture a breaking story and provide context."
The New York Times won four prizes. David Barstow and Alejandra Xanic von Bertrab won for an investigation into Wal-Mart's bribery of officials in Mexico, David Barboza won for exposing corruption among Chinese government officials, and John Branch won for the multimedia feature "Snowfall." The Times staff won for Explanatory Reporting of Apple's business practices in articles like "The iPhone Economy."
In 2012, the newspaper won two prizes.
The awards were announced by Pulitzer Prize administrator Sig Gissler at Columbia University on Monday. Prizes in all 21 categories were announced this year out of more than 2,500 submissions.
The Washington Post's Philip Kennicott won in the criticism category, and The Wall Street Journal's Bret Stephens won in the commentary category. Breaking News Photography went to Associated Press photographers covering the civil war in Syria.
The Gold Medal award for public service went to Sun Sentinel in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., for a series on "off-duty police officers who recklessly speed and endanger the lives of citizens."
Recent winners of the Gold Medal award for Public Service have included Virginia's Bristol Herald Courier (2010) for a series on the state's natural gas royalties, the Los Angeles Times (2011) for exposing corruption in local government and The Philadelphia Inquirer (2012) for a series on school violence.
