'The Purge' Sequel Hitting Theaters in June 2014
The sequel to The Purge will invade theaters on Friday, June 20, 2014.
The next chapter of Universal and Blumhouse's horror thriller will see the return of writer-director James DeMonaco.
The first film -- starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Headey -- was a massive hit when it opened in theaters in early June this year. The horror thriller, made for about $3 million, surprised Hollywood when it scared up $34 million on its opening weekend. It has earned $89.3 million worldwide to date.
The film was set in a society where once a year, there's a 12-hour period when all crime is allowed and condoned.
Producer Jason Blum and Universal announced that they would move forward with a sequel on June 10.
Returning alongside writer-director-producer DeMonaco and Blum to produce the next chapter of the thriller are Sebastien Lemercier and Platinum Dunes partners Michael Bay, Brad Fuller and Andrew Form.
Other wide releases set for that June 20 date are Clint Eastwood's Broadway musical adaptation Jersey Boys and the sequel Think Like a Man Too.
