R. Kelly is on an indefinite hiatus following emergency throat surgery on Tuesday.

Kelly had complained of severe throat pain before being sent to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago by a specialist. There, doctors drained an abscess on one of the singer's tonsils.

"It is not known" when he will be able to resume performing, publicist Allan Mayer said in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter.

Despite the noncommittal prognosis from his camp, Kelly tweeted Wednesday that he'd be back to form soon, "I'd like to thank everybody for their love, concern and support. I WILL BE BACK!"

Kelly recently completed the U.S. leg of his Love Letter tour.

He mentioned his throat issues in a tweet last week, "I refuse to take another cup of theraful! I feel like my throat is coming back. I've been in bed sweating like crazy."

Kelly won a Grammy in 1997 for "I Believe I Can Fly," a song Justin Bieber just cited as one of his five most inspirational songs. Bieber told THR, “This song is kind of like 'Never Say Never,' where anything is possible, and you just have to believe. It’s definitely uplifting."
