NOT READY FOR A CLOSE-UP: All movie star couples have to choose between "power couple" branding and keeping individual actor cred. Sources tell THR that Daniel Craig chose the latter when he insisted new wife Rachel Weisz walk the carpet solo at July 27's Cinema Society screening of her thriller The Whistleblower; later, he snuck into the afterparty at New York's James hotel. "She kept trying to drag him out to take pictures with her," says a source, "but he persisted, 'It's your night; it's not about me.' " To wit, there are barely any photos of the couple from the evening. It will be harder to keep things separate when they promote September's Dream House, in which they co-star. Craig still needs help with his carpet skills: At a premiere of Cowboys & Aliens, a reporter asked what scene he likes best in The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. "The rape scene," he replied stonefaced, walking off. Later, he came back to the same reporter and blurted, "I have a really weird sense of humor."
Perenchios on the Outs
After 24 years of marriage, onetime agent, former Univision CEO/chairman and current billionaire Jerry Perenchio, 80, is said to have separated from wife Marge, an exec producer on the 2002 biopic Frida. Sources say she's living in the guest house of their Bel-Air estate but will receive at least two other homes and use of their Malibu residence.
Gandolfini the Cartoon
James Gandolfini, living in Los Angeles these days, was clearly born to play heavies. Even in the recent play God of Carnage, his adoring-husband character morphs into a raging alpha male. But he has agreed to make his first animated feature, voicing a lead in the Weinsteins' prison-break/alien comedy Escape From Planet Earth, to which Sarah Jessica Parker and Brendan Fraser also will lend their dulcet tones.
Whole Lotta Love?
New couple alert: Sources tell THR that country singer-songwriter Patty Griffin and Robert Plant are "in love and house-hunting in Austin, Texas." Griffin sang on Plant's Band of Joy tour.
Meier's Hot Property
Architect Richard Meier is coming back to the Getty this month to host a lecture -- but it's not for art lovers and architecture buffs. His friends Haim Saban and producer Arnon Milchan have arranged a private evening for Meier to give a talk for Hollywood moguls who revere him -- and who might be interested in buying apartments in Meier's new 37-story Tel Aviv condo building dubbed "Meier on Rothschild," the city's equivalent of NYC's Park Avenue. It's built as floors rather than units. The building project was funded by art collector and LACMA trustee Nicolas Berggruen. A Getty spokesman says the event is private.
Hit the Paz Button
Is Paz de la Huerta out of control -- or simply misunderstood? In the same week she gave an interview in which she blamed Amy Winehouse's death on "bad pictures" that caused low self-esteem, the actress pleaded guilty to charges she assaulted a reality star she argued with in March. An insider says HBO is "totally embarrassed and actually worried" about the Boardwalk Empire star falling down drunk at parties. But a source who works with her says: "She hardly ever goes out. All she wants to do is make her own independent films."
Statham, Tyler Go Home
THR has learned that Jason Statham has bought Ben Stiller and Christine Taylor's house and has been excitedly telling friends. The 10-bedroom Mediterranean in Outpost Estates (near the Hollywood Bowl) includes a guest house and was being offered for $11.5 million. It clearly pays to be an action hero. … Meanwhile, witnessed at the Sunset Tower Hotel recently: a woman checking in and asking for a room -- for a month or two. "My house has been for sale for a while," she explained to a desk clerk. "Then tonight, Steven Tyler and his girlfriend walked in and decided to buy it with everything in it and pay cash if I would leave tonight." Looking at the amount of luggage she had, it was clear she took them up on it. Reps for Statham, Stiller and Tyler did not get back to THR.
