Reality fuels Fox; viewers title for CBS

NEW YORK -- Fox won last week's primetime battle in adults 18-49, while CBS captured the victory in viewership, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday.

Thanks to reality shows "Hell's Kitchen" and "So You Think You Can Dance," Fox held a comfortable lead in the demo during a typical summer week of TV.

Fox won Monday with a double shot of reality: a special "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" (8.6 million, 2.9/9) that led into a winning performance by "Kitchen" (8.9 million, 4.2/12). ABC's "CMA Music Festival" (6.5 million, 1.9/6) came in fourth place between 9 p.m. and 11 p.m.

Tuesday belonged to NBC, with "America's Got Talent" (9.8 million, 2.9/10) and the sinking "Singing Bee" (9.5 million, 3.2/9). "Singing Bee" still was the night's top show in adults 18-49 and was strong for the week.

Wednesday reverted back to Fox, with "So You Think You Can Dance" (7.9 million, 3.1/10) and "Don't Forget the Lyrics" (7.4 million, 2.8/8) winning against ABC's "The Next Best Thing" (7.1 million, 2.0/7) and "American Inventor" (6.1 million, 2.0/6) as well as NBC's "Last Comic Standing" (6.2 million, 2.5/8). Fox also won Thursday, with "Lyrics" (8.8 million, 3.2/11) and "Dance" (9.1 million, 3.2/10) hitting the high notes for the night.

Sunday went to Fox as well with two episodes of "Family Guy," including a 9:30 p.m. program that averaged 6.4 million viewers and a 3.1/9 to make it the highest-rated show in the demo Sunday. CBS won in viewers thanks to "60 Minutes" (8.7 million, 1.4/5).

After "NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams" won last week in viewership and the adults 25-54 demographic, ABC's "World News With Charles Gibson" returned to first place with 7.5 million viewers and a 1.8/8 in adults 25-54 compared with NBC's 7.2 million and a 1.7/8. "CBS Evening News With Katie Couric" averaged 5.9 million viewers and a 1.4/6 in the demo.

In cable news, MSNBC topped CNN for No. 2 behind Fox News with 195,000 viewers in July for the adults 25-54 demo from 7 p.m.-2 a.m. EDT compared with 189,000 for CNN, according to Nielsen Media Research. MSNBC also led CNN in primetime; the network said it was the first time it has topped CNN for a full month since 2001.

In primetime among the adults 18-49 demographic, Fox (5.8 million, 2.3/8) was tops, with CBS (6.3 million, 1.8/6) winning in viewership. NBC drew 5.4 million and a 1.7/6, followed by ABC (4.9 million, 1.6/5) and the CW (1.9 million, 0.7/2).
