Rebecca Black Making $27,000 a Week From 'Friday'
The widely panned song has been streamed more than 33 million times on YouTube -- and remains ranked as a bestseller on iTunes.
Rebecca Black has been widely panned for her Internet tune "Friday."
But she's laughing all the way to the bank.
Despite a Forbes.com report that she stands to make $1 million from the tune (the story has since been amended) -- new figures from Billboard.com say about $27,000 a week is more accurate. According to 101 Distribution, an independent music distributor, iTunes pays 70 cents per download. "Friday" has reportedly been downloaded several hundred thousand times, and is listed as No. 45 on iTunes best-selling singles list.
Black could make even more when she releases her acoustic version of the song to dispel rumors that she needs AutoTune to sing.
Black's mom paid $2,000 to L.A.-based Ark Music Factory to record the song, which went viral online -- and received a staggering 33 million and counting views on YouTube. (By comparison, Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" has been watched 22 million times.)
She has said she'll donate a portion of the proceeds to Japan earthquake relief.
In interviews, the 13-year-old California singer said she has been hurt by the all the angry online comments, including "I hope you cut yourself, and I hope you'll get an eating disorder so you'll look pretty."
"When I first saw all the nasty comments, I did cry. … I don't think I'm the worst singer, but I don't think I'm the best," Black said last Friday on Good Morning America.
