'Red Hill' gets US release
Revenge western gets Aussie take in debut featureSYDNEY -- Australian crime thriller “Red Hill” is to get a U.S. release after being acquired by Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group, the company said Thursday.
The debut feature of Melbourne-based filmmaker Patrick Hughes, “Red Hill” stars Ryan Kwanten, Steve Bisley and Tom E. Lewis. Covering 48 hours, it follows young police officer Shane Cooper (Kwanten) as he relocates to the small country town of Red Hill with his pregnant wife Alice to start a family. But when news of a prison break sends the local law enforcement officers -- led by the town’s ruling presence, Old Bill -- into a panic, Shane’s first day on duty rapidly turns into a nightmare.
“Hughes has contemporized the revenge western with such style and adrenaline that we jumped at the opportunity to distribute such a bad ass movie,” said Scott Shooman vice president of acquisitions and production - Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions Group.
The film recently had its world premiere at the Berlin Film Festival, where it was picked up for distribution in France, Germany, the U.K. and Canada. To be distributed here by Transmission Films, an Australian release date has yet to be set.
