Relativity Names Matt Alvarez President of New Multicultural Division
Matt Alvarez is joining Relativity as evp production and president of the studio's new multicultural division.
He has produced films including Ride Along, Are We There Yet? and the upcoming N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton through Cube Vision, which he established with rapper/actor Ice Cube. He begins at Relativity this month.
The new multicultural division he heads will focus on developing projects with diverse filmmakers. It will launch with the upcoming Beyond the Lights, which was written and directed by Gina-Prince Blythewood and stars Belle's Gugu Mbatha-Raw as a young musician on the brink of superstardom. The film is set for a Nov. 14 release.
"Matt Alvarez is one of the most creative and successful executives in our industry and is the perfect person to build out our new multicultural division," Relativity president Tucker Tooley said in a statement. "He has a keen eye, remarkable relationships and an incredible track-record. We have had a great experience working with him on Beyond the Lights and look forward to building off that success."

"I am excited to work with Tucker, [production president] Robbie [Brenner] and their entire team on implementing our vision for a multicultural division."
Ride Along was a record-breaking hit, scoring $48.1 million for the best Martin Luther King Jr. Day weekend of all time. It has since grossed over $153 million worldwide on its $25 million budget, and a sequel is set for January 2016.
Alvarez started at New Line Cinema, where he worked on films including Rumble in the Bronx and Deconstructing Harry.
