Little Black Dress With Your Lo-Mein? Rent the Runway Launches Same-Day Delivery Service
Order by lunchtime and get your outfit by happy hour.
Rent the Runway wants it to make it as easy for you to pick up a new designer dress as it is to order takeout Chinese food.
The Manhattan-based company that allows consumers to rent — you guessed it — off-the-runway designs for four or eight days at a time, all for a fraction of the cost of actually purchasing the item new, is launching a same-day delivery service for customers in New York. Rent the Runway plans to expand the program to different cities in the future.
Invited to a last-minute gala or swanky party? Nothing to wear to this weekend's wedding? No problem — the new delivery service promises that orders placed by noon are guaranteed delivery by happy hour (5 p.m.). Plus, like Postmates or Seamless, customers will receive mobile tracking updates and can adjust the delivery window accordingly. For Rent the Runway's PRO members (which costs a $30 annual fee), the delivery cost is $9.95.
"With the launch of Same-Day Delivery, we are one step closer to our vision of a closet-less future," says Jennifer Hyman, CEO and co-founder of the company. "Consumers are accustomed to on-demand services like Seamless, Uber and Netflix. By giving them the ability to get last-minute looks on demand, we are bringing the modern woman's closet into the 21st century."
The move is being posed as a response to Amazon's rapid delivery services, as well as Net-a-Porter's same-day delivery service. However, rather than making a full commitment to purchasing the garment, Rent the Runway customers have the option to constantly rotate the pieces in their closets.
