RIAJ: Japanese physical market slides by 16%

Trend continues as domestic and international maintain

TOKYO -- The Record Industry Association of Japan released figures for the overall physical music production in Japan in 2009 that show the market continuing to decline, with total production of audio units down 16% in terms of value.

The total production for audio in 2009 came to 214.3 million units, down 13% from the previous year, for a value of 249.6 billion yen ($2.75 billion), which is down 16% in value compared to 2008.

As for the breakdown between domestic and international repertoire, overall audio production mirrored last year's figures exactly with domestic maintaining 78% of production and international 22%.

Domestic audio saw 166.5 million units produced for a value of 193.6 billion yen ($2.1 billion), down 13% by volume and down 16% by value compared to the previous year.

International audio production was 47.8 million units for a value of 56 billion yen ($618 million). These figures were down 14% in production from the previous year and down 13% in value.

Music video production, including DVD, was very slightly up. A total of 59.2 million video units were produced in 2009, up 6% from the previous year. Total value of video production was 66.9 billion yen ($739 million), up 2% from 2008.
