Ricky Gervais’ ‘Idiot’ Back for Second Season at Science
Science, Investigation Discovery, Discovery Fit & Health unveil widespread programming slate for 2011-12.
The premiere of Ricky Gervais’ An Idiot Abroad 2: The Bucket List was among the new programming unveiled Thursday as part of Science, Investigation Discovery and Discovery Fit & Health’s broad 2011-12 slate.
The second set of Idiot will see Gervais and Stephen Merchant send the reluctant Karl Pilkington to experience the adventures that must be experienced before you die.
“It was hard work getting Karl to agree to another torture session, I mean series,” Gervais said. “It was time to give him a piece of the pie. It will most probably end up in his face. Most people think that the name of our production company, RiSK, is a combination of our initials. It’s also because there is a small chance that Karl could die.”
Science, which was recently rebranded by parent Discovery, will also debut four new series: Prophets of Science Fiction; Agent of Invention; Will Wright Future Project; and Weird Travel. In addition to Idiot, four other series will return: Meteorite Men; How Its Made; Through the Wormhole With Morgan Freeman; and Mantracker.
Science also set six specials, including Ridley Scott’s Prophets of Science Fiction.
Among ID’s new programming as part of its upfront slate: the docu-soap Big Law: Deputy Butterbean, featuring former superheavyweight boxer Eric Esch; Real Crime/Reel Story; Homicide Hunter: Lt. Joe Kenda; Real Streets Miami; Hostage: Do or Die; Hunting Justice With M. William Phelps; Crimes of Passion; Deadly Sins; and Unraveled: Countdown to a Kill.
More than 20 returning series were also announced, including Stolen Voices, Buried Secrets. New limited series and specials include ID Investigates; holiday specials will include Black Widows Week, which investigates the string of murders.
ID reaches more than 73 million homes and has added 17 million subscribers in the past 13 months.
“We are reaching to become a top 10 network by making the largest investment in original programming in the network’s history — adding new, personality-driven series to our incredibly strong foundation of 23 established hits,” ID president and GM Henry Schleiff said in making the announcement.
Discovery Fit & Health, meanwhile, will add nine titles to its lineup, which launched Feb. 1: Dr. G Medical Examiner; My Secret Body; Bizzare ER; Teen Tamer, My Teen’s a Nightmare: I’m Moving Out; and hourlong specials My Mom and Me; Under 18 Under the Knife; and Underage & Having Sex.
