A sheer dress, big hat and mother-son matching duo were among the head-turning looks

The 2014 red carpets had the Internet all abuzz, with a barely there dress topping the trending list and an oversized hat with its own Twitter account commanding fifth place. The Hollywood Reporter breaks down the top five red carpet appearances that trended on Google this year and examines why each garnered World Wide Web attention.

Rihanna, CFDA Awards Red Carpet

The "Diamonds" singer raised eyebrows for her walk on the CFDA Fashion Awards red carpet while donning a sheer custom Adam Selman dress, gloves and headscarf that consisted of over 216,000 Swarovski crystals. Though the floor-length gown covered Rihanna's feet, the crystals were not the showstoppers — the see-through material showcased her own sets of private diamonds both in front and behind.

Lorde, Grammy Awards Red Carpet

At the ripe age of 17, Lorde was nominated for record, song and pop solo of the year and best pop vocal album. The two-time Grammy winner made her first appearance at the annual awards show sporting a dark look in a long-sleeved, floor length black Balenciaga gown paired with a dark lip. She told Billboard that the Grammys "sounds like prom on 'roids.' " While the musician is known to be mature for her age, audiences questioned whether her red carpet look was too drastic for a teen.

Lupita Nyong'o, Oscars Red Carpet

Lupita Nyong'o won both on and off the stage at the 2014 Academy Awards. The Best Supporting Actress nominee took home the Oscar for her role in 12 Years A Slave and had the Twittersphere buzzing for her custom designed sky blue Grecian Prada gown. "The blue reminded me of Nairobi," the Kenyan star said on the red carpet.

Madonna, Grammy Awards Red Carpet

It was all in the family for Madonna and eight-year-old son David Banda on the Grammys red carpet. The duo opted for matching black suits, ties and fedora hats at the awards show. The Queen of Pop individualized her look with a cane and showed off her pearly whites with a personalized gold grill, telling E!'s Ryan Seacrest before the show, "It pisses everybody off when I wear my grill, so that's why I wear it."

Pharrell Williams, Grammy Awards and Oscars Red Carpets

It was a happy year for Pharrell Williams, who made not one, but two trending appearances for his bold fashion statements on both the Grammys and the Oscars red carpets. The "Happy" singer stood apart at the Grammy Awards wearing an oversized brown hat — the hat has its own Twitter account (@Pharrellhat) with 19K followers — that was auctioned in a charity event for $44,100 to the Arby's fast food chain.

Pharrell also made an untraditional outfit choice at the Academy Awards, opting for shorts instead of pants to pair with his blazer, button-up and bow tie, standing alongside his wife, Helen Lasichanh, who also donned a suit — but with pants.
