The selection for this year’s Premiere Brazil section of the 15th Rio de Janeiro Film Festival was announced on Tuesday, unveiling a list of 69 titles (41 features and 28 short films) that included 21 world premieres. The announcement also revealed two new prizes in Premiere Brazil, the world’s main display of Brazilian cinema: best documentary direction and a special jury prize for New Trends, one of PB’s sidebars.

These are the first films announced for one of Latin America’s largest and most omnivorous fests, which spreads across more than 20 venues in Rio de Janeiro and usually screens more than 400 films in sections like Panorama, Environment, Midnight Movies and Gay World.

The 2014 class of Premiere Brazil includes 10 feature-length fiction films, 10 feature-length documentaries, and 16 shorts in the main competition. Five more fiction features and two documentaries will screen hors concours, including Pablo Fendrik’s Cannes entry The Ardor, starring Gael Garcia Bernal and Alice Braga.

The slate includes films from young directors like Eryk Rocha, popular musician Chico Teixeira, and Felipe Barbosa next to the latest from experienced filmmakers such as Murilo Salles, and Domingos Oliveira.

"Once again, this is an expression of Brazilian cinema’s diversity," festival director Ilda Santiago told O Globo newspaper. "Our focus has been on presenting a wide landscape of the year’s finest Brazilian productions. We’ve prioritized films the whole world has been interested in and the Rio audience can appreciate."

The festival will run Sept. 24 to Oct. 8 and also hosts the Rio Market for Film and TV, one of the largest industry events of the region.
