'Rio' Remains No. 1 on DVD, Blu-ray Charts
Universal's "Paul" finished second, selling about half as many DVDs as the animated family feature.
Despite several high-profile new releases arriving in stores, the animated family feature Rio, from 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, remained the country’s top-selling DVD and Blu-ray Disc its sophomore week.
Rio, which grossed more than $143 million in U.S. theaters, encored at No. 1 the week ending Aug. 14 on both Nielsen VideoScan’s First Alert sales chart and Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
Finishing second on both charts: Universal Studios’ Paul, a $37.4 million-grossing comedy reuniting Simon Pegg and Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) as two comic book geeks who go on a road trip with an alien. Paul sold about half as many units, overall, as Rio during the week, although the Blu-ray Disc version sold 84 percent as many copies as the Blu-ray of Rio. Not surprisingly, 49 percent of total unit sales for Paul came from the Blu-ray Disc, while for Rio the percentage was just 29 percent.
Debuting at No. 3 on the overall sales chart (and No. 6 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart) was Sony Pictures’ Jumping the Broom, a comedy starring Angela Bassett that earned $37.3 million in theaters.
Jumping the Broom also debuted at No. 1 on Home Media Magazine’s video rental chart for the week, chiefly because both Rio and Paul won’t be available at Netflix or Redbox until a month after their release.
Jumping the Broom bumped the previous week’s top renter, Soul Surfer, also from Sony Pictures, to No. 2 on the Home Media Magazine chart.
Soul Surfer – based on the true story of a young surfer girl who gathers the courage to go back into the ocean after losing her arm in a savage shark attack – dropped from No. 2 to No. 6 on First Alert and No. 7 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart.
Your Highness, an adventure comedy, starring Natalie Portman, that made just $21.6 million in theaters, debuted at No. 4 on First Alert (No. 3, Blu-ray). Two other new releases, Walt Disney Studios’ Fox and the Hound/Fox and the House II and Mars Needs Moms, bowed at No. 5 and No. 6, respectively, on the sales chart (No. 4 and No. 5, Blu-ray).
