Roger Ailes: Jon Stewart Is 'Crazy,' NPR Are 'Nazis'

The Fox News boss also defends Bill O'Reilly, saying "he's moved to the left. He's been very fair and balanced on Obama, Bush, everyone.”

In a wide-ranging interview, Fox News boss Roger Ailes had clear words for Jon Stewart - who he called smart, but depended on polarization - and National Public Radio executives for firing Juan Williams for comments about fearing airplane passengers in Muslim garb.

“They are, of course, Nazis," he told the The Daily Beast's Howard Kurtz about NPR executives. "They have a kind of Nazi attitude. They are the left wing of Nazism. These guys don’t want any other point of view. They don’t even feel guilty using tax dollars to spout their propaganda. They are basically Air America with government funding to keep them alive.”

Kurtz cited an NPR rep as saying the company will let Ailes' words speak for themselves.

Ailes called Williams, who got a three-year contract from Fox News as a result, "a pure liberal" and said he wanted to compensate the talking head for his losses because he was “mad” about the situation.

Discussing Stewart, who when he appeared on the O’Reilly Factor a few weeks ago stopped by Ailes’ office for an hour-long chat about politics, the Fox News chief said: “He’s obviously really, really smart." But he added: “He openly admits he’s sort of an atheist and a socialist."

But he also blasted Stewart for his views on conservatives.

“He hates conservative views. He hates conservative thoughts. He hates conservative verbiage. He hates conservatives,” said Ailes. “He makes a living by attacking conservatives and stirring up a liberal base against it,"

“He’s crazy. If it wasn’t polarized, he couldn’t make a living. He makes a living by attacking conservatives and stirring up a liberal base against it... He loves polarization. He depends on it. If liberals and conservatives are all getting along, how good would that show be? It’d be a bomb.”

Ailes says Stewart’s casting of Fox and MSNBC at his Washington rally last month as “24-hour politico, pundit, perpetual panic conflictinator” is “horseshit.”

“Look what he does to Sarah Palin,” Ailes sniped.

Asked by Kurtz about Bill O'Reilly and a potential shift by the Fox News host, Ailes said: “Bill has not moved to the right." He added: “He’s moved to the left. He’s been very fair and balanced on Obama, Bush, everyone.”

Ailes also highlighted that O'Reilly has never given money to political candidates - like MSNBC's Keith Olbermann did - before quipping: “Because he’s cheap.”
