RomaCinemaFest unveils films for 2nd edition
EmptyNEMI, Italy -- Shekhar Kapur's "Elizabeth: The Golden Age" will open the sophomore edition of the RomaCinemaFest, organizers revealed Thursday.
The announcement came as part of an early look at the Oct. 18-27 festival's lineup, which appears set to produce a star-laden red carpet.
Francis Ford Coppola will be on hand with his previously announced entry "Youth Without Youth," his first film in a decade.
In explaining his decision to screen the romantic thriller starring Tim Roth in Rome, Coppola praised the second-year festival.
"My film was requested by every film festival," Coppola said in a statement. "But I didn't want to send it, I think film festivals are ... just good at creating controversies. There's not any real interest in the movies, which are sacrificed to feed film critics. On the contrary, in Rome there seems to be a good will to choose and screen films for the audience."
Coppola will be joined on the red carpet by Roth, son Roman (who plays a small role in the film), his daughter Sofia, his wife Eleanor and Bruno Ganz, one of the film's co-stars.
Other films set for the Roma program include Italian arthouse drama "Giorni e Nuvole" (Days and Clouds) by Silvio Soldini and "The Third Mother," a new horror thriller from Dario Argento. The film, which features his daughter Asia, is the last part of Argento's "Three Mothers" trilogy.
Other films include Alain Corneau's "Le Deuxieme Souffle" (The Second Wind), starring Daniel Auteuil and Monica Bellucci; Hector Babenco's comedy "El Pasado" (The Past); Steven Sebring's documentary "Patti Smith: A Dream of Life"; and Sidney Lumet's "Before The Devil Knows You're Dead," which stars Philip Seymour Hoffman, Ethan Hawke, Albert Finney and Marisa Tomei.
Organizers said that all 14 competition titles in Rome will be world or European premieres.
Accompanying "Elizabeth" to Rome will be director Kapur, Oscar-winner Cate Blanchett, Geoffrey Rush and Clive Owen. Among those joining them on the red carpet are Soldini, Dario and Asia Argento, Auteuil, Bellucci, Smith, Lumet, Hoffman, Hawke, Finney, Tomei, Colin Firth, Val Kilmer and Matthew Modine.
The full lineup for the Rome event will be released in September.
