Ron Livingston Defends News Anchor Sister Criticized for Her Weight
The "Office Space" star speaks out after a nasty letter from a viewer called Jennifer Livingston a bad example for being plus-sized.
Hollywood generally doesn't concern itself with the affairs of local news anchors in Wisconsin, but Ron Livingston had a vested interest in the hoopla surrounding La Crosse, Wisconsin, journalist Jennifer Livingston.
She is, as you might have guessed, his sister.
Jennifer entered the national spotlight earlier this week when she responded to a letter critical of her weight, sent to her by local viewer Kenneth Krause. Her on-air response became a viral sensation -- performing is clearly in the Livingston family blood -- and Ron issued a statement backing her all the way.
"My sister Jennifer ... brings an exceptional dedication to her job, her family, and her community, and has been a role model of mine for many, many years," he said in a statement to People Magazine.
Jennifer said during an appearance on Good Morning America Thursday that she received a text from her brother after she made her on-air remarks.
"The truth is, I am overweight. You can call me fat -- and yes, even obese on a doctor's chart," she said on air on WKBT-TV. "But to the person who wrote me that letter, do you think I don't know that? That your cruel words are pointing out something that I don't see? You don't know me. You are not a friend of mine. You are not a part of my family... you know nothing about me but what you see on the outside."
Krause wrote in his letter, which was posted by Jennifer's co-worker on Facebook, that he was concerned that Livingston was setting a bad example, and doubled down after Jennifer responded.
"Given this country’s present epidemic of obesity and the many truly horrible diseases related thereto," he wrote, "and considering Jennifer Livingston’s fortuitous position in the community, I hope she will finally take advantage of a rare and golden opportunity to influence the health and psychological well-being of Coulee Region by transforming herself for all of her viewers to see over the next year, and, to that end, I would be absolutely pleased to offer Jennifer any advice or support she would be willing to accept."
