Runway Rock: AlunaGeorge Plays Rebecca Minkoff's NYFW Show
The It Brits serenaded a stylish crowd at Minkoff's fall '14 show, including Carrie Underwood, Zosia Mamet, Anna Kendrick and Coco Rocha.
Rebecca Minkoff might be best known for her upbeat, urbane leather goods, but the New York-based designer has another talent, too -- booking really cool musicians to play her fashion week runways.
Janelle Monae, Theophilus London, DJ Cassidy and Sean Lennon have each provided a live soundtrack to catwalks of her past. And on Friday, Minkoff kept her solid musical legacy alive by inviting British electronic duo AlunaGeorge to set the tone for her fall 2014 collection.
"I heard that song that they did with White Noise [Disclosure] and basically became a fan then," Minkoff told Pret-a-Reporter over goat cheese pizza squares and fruit in Lincoln Center's Samsung Galaxy Backstage Lounge after her show.
The duo -- aka Aluna Francis and George Reid -- played three songs as a bevy of beauties clad in 70's-heavy gold lame jumpsuits, muted-hue wool coats and tailored pinstripe blazers made their way down the runway. On one side, Francis crooned while wearing a Minkoff-made turquoise and white shift dress; across the aisle Reid worked magic on his boards.
The music wasn't the only thing firing up Minkoff's crowd. She also boasted a boldfacer-packed front row including Bella Thorne, Coco Rocha, Zosia Mamet, Anna Kendrick and Carrie Underwood -- who, Minkoff says, wasn't actually invited.
"You always extend the invitations and hope people come," Minkoff said. "But we didn't invite Carrie to come, she asked to come and I was like yes, of course you can come!"
As for her strategy for booking great bands, the designer relies on a healthy dose of cool factor and good, old fashioned intuition.
"I try to get them when they're going up. And you cross your fingers and you hope that continues."
