"These people on the left are not independent thinkers," the conservative host said after playing a clip of Colbert announcing the firing of the FBI director.

Stephen Colbert's audience doesn't know whether they should love that President Donald Trump fired FBI director James Comey or hate that he fired him.

At least that's how Rush Limbaugh framed reaction to Tuesday night's monologue from the host of CBS' The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, whose announcement that Comey was fired was met with applause and joyous hoots of approval.

"Huge, huge Donald Trump fans here tonight," Colbert said, pointing at his cheering audience.

"They have been conditioned to believe that Comey stole the election," Limbaugh explained to his radio audience Wednesday after playing an audio clip.

"The Democrats have been dumping on Comey for nine months," Limbaugh said, asserting that Colbert's audience is made up of liberals.

Limbaugh rehashed how Comey reopened Hillary Clinton's email investigation just prior to the election, making him a villain on the left, but also noted that Comey was investigating Trump's alleged ties to Russians, making him a hero to the left.

"Hillary's charge that Comey interfered with the election just got kicked to the curb," Limbaugh told his audience of millions on Wednesday.

"Democrats want Comey around because of a phony collusion narrative between Trump and Russians," Limbaugh said. "You could say that Donald Trump was actually protecting the honor of Hillary Clinton by getting rid of the guy that mistreated her."

Limbaugh called the Colbert monologue (video is below) "one of the Top 5 most illustrative, indicative things in this entire past 18 hours."

"His audience practically gave it a standing O, and Colbert didn't know what to do. ... He's fully expecting his audience to boo and hiss," Limbaugh said.

"Those were liberal Democrats, robots, mind-numbed. They just can't keep up whether they're supposed to hate Comey or not," he said.

"I don't know how many people think this is a big deal. I happen to," Limbaugh explained. "It's a teachable moment for conservatives in terms of understanding — if there's any doubt — what we're up against. These people on the left are not independent thinkers ... they absorb the media for their instructions."
