Russell Brand Deported From Japan
Katy Perry tweeted that her comedian husband was taken in custody after flying to Japan to see her perform "for priors from over 10 years ago!"
Comedian Russell Brand was in Japanese custody this weekend and later deported from the country, according to tweets by Brand’s wife Katy Perry. Brand had flown to Japan to see Perry perform.
"So...my husband just got deported from Japan," Perry tweeted around 3 p.m. Tokyo time. "I am so. sad. I brought him all this way to show him my favorite place #tokyodreamscrushed."
An hour later, she tweeted the deportation "was for priors from over 10 years ago!"
Perry was quick to add that she held no hard feelings for Japan, especially for her fans in the country.
“But of COURSE I ? my Japanese fans & the show #MUSTGOON no matter the daily aftershocks or husband kidnappings! #it'snotrightbutit'soka.”
Neither Perry nor Brand specified what those prior offenses were, though he has spoken about past drug addiction and run ins with the law. For his part, Brand publicly treated the Japanese incident with humor.
"Planning escape from Japanese custody. It's bloody hard to dig a tunnel with a chopstick,” he tweeted Sunday.
He also wrote that Stokholm Syndrome was “kicking in,” and he had asked his guard out for some vegetarian sushi.
It's unclear exactly what happened as the couple are known to engage in humorous tweets, and Brand's deportation has not been confirmed by Japanese authorities.
"We don't make comments on such a matter because of privacy concerns," a Tokyo immigration official told AFP.
Brand and Perry were married in India last October in a traditional Hindu ceremony. Perry is in Asia this week promoting her latest album Teenage Dream.
