Russia Box Office: 'Hotel Transylvania 2' Debuts on Top
'Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension' opened in second, while 'The Martian' slipped to third.
Hotel Transylvania 2 debuted on top of the Russian box office, followed by the fifth installment in the Paranormal Activity franchise.
The animated comedy grossed 376.6 million rubles ($5.8 million) in its first weekend in theaters, according to data from the research company Movie Research.
Paranormal Activity: The Ghost Dimension lagged substantially behind, taking in 110 million rubles ($1.7 million).
The Martian, which was the two previous weekends' champion, slipped two positions down to third place. The movie added 103.4 million rubles ($1.6 million) to its gross, which allowed Ridley Scott's sci-fi drama to enter the top 10 of the year's highest grossing films.
The local comedy Bez granits (Without Frontiers), directed by Karen Oganesyan, Rezo Gigineishvili and Roman Prygunov, debuted in fourth place. It grossed 81.3 million rubles ($1.3 million).
The Walk was two positions down, in fifth place, adding 66.1 million rubles ($1 million) to its gross in the second weekend in theaters.
Four non-Hollywood movies made the top 10 this past weekend. In addition to Without Frontiers, the local films Rodina (Motherland) and Voina polov (War of Sexes) and Paolo Sorrentino's Cannes movie Youth were among the 10 top-grossing movies.
