Russia Box Office: 'Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials' Debuts on Top

'Everest' was in second place, opening at IMAX theaters only.

Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials debuted on top of the Russian box office this past weekend, showing the best opening-weekend take since this year's champion, Minions, was released in mid-July.

Maze Runner grossed 276.3 million rubles ($4.2 million), according to data from the research company Movie Research.

The movie's gross substantially surpassed a forecast made by the main local trade journal, Exhibitors' Bulletin, which predicted the figure to be just 100 million rubles ($1.5 million)

Everest, which only opened at IMAX theaters, debuted in second place, grossing 45.3 million rubles ($685,000).

The previous weekend's champion The Transporter Refueled was in third place, adding 32.4 million rubles ($490,000) to its gross.

The local horror movie Pikovaya Dama: Cherny Obryad (The Queen of Spades: Black Rite) was in fourth place. It grossed 28 million rubles ($424,000) in the second weekend of its theater run.

The Chinese animated film Tu Xia Chuan Qi: Qing Li Chuan Shuo (Legend of a Rabbit: The Martial of Fire) debuted in fifth place, taking in 20 million rubles ($303,000).
