Russia Box Office: Ron Howard's 'In the Heart of the Sea' Debuts on Top
Local film 'He Is a Dragon,' produced by Timur Bekmambetov, had a lackluster opening.
In the Heart of the Sea was the weekend's box-office champion in Russia, followed by The Good Dinosaur and Goosebumps.
Ron Howard's sea epic, starring Chris Hemsworth, grossed $1.9 million (132.5 million rubles), according to data from research company Movie Research. It is based on the real-life sinking of the whaleship Essex in 1820. The crew was lost at sea for 90 days.
The previous weekend's top film, Pixar's The Good Dinosaur, slipped to the second place. The animated fantasy took in $1.3 million (89.1 million rubles).
Goosebumps debuted in third, grossing 86.2 million rubles ($1.2 million).
One of this year's most expensive local movies, $20 million fantasy film On – drakon (He Is a Dragon), produced by Timur Bekmambetov's company Bazelevs, had a disappointing start. The movie grossed $861,000 (59.8 million rubles), a low figure compared with most of Bazelevs' other recent releases.
Bridge of Spies debuted in fifth place, taking in $787,000 (54.6 million rubles).
Apart from He Is a Dragon, the only other local film on the top 10 was Vasily Sigarev's Strana OZ (Country OZ).
