Oscar-winning Russian director Nikita Mikhalkov has been awarded Boccalino d'Oro Independent Critics' Award at the Locarno International Film Festival.

Mikhalkov's press service quoted a letter from the festival informing the director about the prize, which was awarded to him for his lifetime contribution to the art of cinema.

Still, the director wouldn't be able to accept the award in person.

"Unfortunately, Mikhalkov will be unable to receive his award in person at the festival’s award ceremony to be held on August 14," the press service stressed.

Mikhalkov, 69, is one of Russia's most decorated film directors. Apart from a best foreign language film Oscar, which he collected back in 1995 for Burnt by the Sun, he is the winner of Venice's Golden Lion and Cannes' Grand Prize of the Jury.

His most recent appearance on the international festival circuit was five years ago, when Mikhalkov's movie Exodus: Burnt by the Sun 2 took part in the official selection at Cannes.

Mikhalkov is also president of the Moscow International Film Festival.
