Larocca comes to Getaway from Chernin Entertainment.

Anthony and Joe Russo, the television comedy directors-turned-Marvel franchise filmmakers, may be working on Captain America: Civil War, but they are also moving full steam ahead with the formation of their Sony-based production company.

The brothers have hired Mike Larocca as president of their banner, which they have christened Getaway Productions.

Getaway signed a first-look deal with Sony earlier in March. “The goal of the company,” Joe Russo tells The Hollywood Reporter, “is to bring to Sony high-concept material that focuses on storytelling and character and execute it with the right directors."

Larocca comes to Getaway from Chernin Entertainment, the Fox-based production company run by Peter Chernin, where he oversaw a range of projects, from comedies to sci-fi franchises.

He has an executive producer credit on the Chernin-produced Spy, the Melissa McCarthy action comedy that is generating buzz in advance of its June 5 release.

Larocca was also a producer on The Drop, Chernin’s crime drama starring James Gandolfini and Tom Hardy and a co-producer on 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes and the Tom Cruise sci-fi thriller Oblivion.

Prior to working at Chernin, Larocca was also an exec at Spyglass entertainment. Early on in his career, he also worked as an assistant to producer Scott Rudin.

“Mike shares our aesthetic and work ethic,” said Anthony Russo. “He’s driven by the same principles as we are: storytelling, narrative and looking to bring big ideas to an audience with a level of sophistication."

One of the first projects Larocca will be involved with is a doozy: an installment of the Ghostbusters franchise that will be produced by Getaway as well as Ivan Reitman and Channing Tatum.

“They have a huge bandwidth and we’ll be focused on movies and ideas that have the potential to become franchise opportunities,” said Larocca. “I can’t wait to get started.”

Larocca begins April 1, which is when Getaway officially opens its doors. The Russos commence principal photography on Civil War at the end of April.
