THR's Actress Roundtable: Marion Cotillard Opens Up About French Razzie Nomination (Video)
“I spent two months in the middle of the desert wanting to kill him,” the Oscar winner said of the director who helmed the ill-fated film.
It hasn’t always been critical acclaim and rewarding projects for Oscar winner Marion Cotillard.
The actress spoke about the role that earned her a French Razzie-like nomination and the director she described as “bad, bad, bad” during The Hollywood Reporter’s Actress Roundtable.
After fighting for a project and the director who’d brought it to her, Cotillard learned too late that vouching for the filmmaker had been a mistake.
“I spent two months in the middle of the desert wanting to kill him and wanting to beat myself because I fought for him and he was so bad,” Cotillard said. “He had no idea what we were doing. He had no idea what he wanted to do.”
The Oscar contender, who now stars in the French-language film Rust and Bone, said she was unable to perform an emotional scene she normally would have had no trouble doing. She tried to imagine she was working with a director she respected, such as Michael Mann or Rob Marshall, rather than the unnamed helmer of this film.
“I realized if I don’t trust the director, if I don’t like him, I’m going to be bad. It was impossible, and I got my French version of the Razzie Award nomination for this movie,” she said. “I really wanted to have it.”
Cotillard even prepared this line for an acceptance speech: “Without this director, none of this would have been possible.”
Cotillard’s comments came during a roundtable discussion with fellow actresses Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams, Sally Field, Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz and Helen Hunt. The roundtable was moderated by THR news editor Matthew Belloni and executive editor features Stephen Galloway.
