RWS&H, Macmillan eye films

Lit agency partners with publishing house for adaptations

Literary agency Rabineau Wachter Sanford & Harris has partnered with publishing house Macmillan to exclusively handle the movie and TV rights for its book and other properties.

Macmillan has wide-ranging imprints including Farrar, Straus & Giroux; Henry Holt and Co.; St. Martin's Press; Tor Books; Picador; Feiwel and Friends; and Roaring Brook Press. The titles range from thrillers to science fiction to children's and young adult, as well as college books and Scientific American magazine.

The majority of the titles are unagented and on the backlist.

RWSH will work with the publisher to identify the most-promising titles then target the best production companies, studios and distributors that are in prime position to develop the properties into feature and television formats.

The deal is a bit of a coup for the boutique agency yet made sense for the publisher as RWSH specializes in book properties. The deal also puts the publisher squarely in the book-to-film business.

It also will put a great deal of unexplored literary properties before buyers.
