The venerable Wilshire Theatre Beverly Hills will be renamed Saban Theatre as it uses a $5 million donation from Cheryl and Haim Saban for ongoing restoration of the 1930s landmark.

The Beverly Hills Performing Arts Center announced the donation Friday, saying it will be used to renovate the art deco theater's orchestra and proscenium and to refurbish its marquee.

"Their donation and commitment to our organization will ensure that the historic Wilshire Theatre Beverly Hills remains a celebrated center for the performing arts in Los Angeles," BHPAC president Rabbi David Baron said.

Investor Haim Saban is chairman and CEO of Saban Capital Group.

Designed by Charles Lee, the Wilshire Theatre served as one of the premiere movie houses in the Los Angeles area during its first 50 years. It now plays Broadway performances, films and comedy shows and is home to the Temple of the Arts synagogue. (partialdiff)
