Samantha Bee Tears Down Trump's Election Integrity Commission
"Those mythical 3 million illegal voters are the president's obsession, his white whale. Although if the whale were white, Trump would be a lot less concerned about it voting."
On Wednesday's Full Frontal, Samantha Bee criticized Donald Trump's Commission on Election Integrity, saying the men who are running it are all long-term fans of voter suppression.
She played clips of Trump's unsubstantiated claims that there was widespread voter fraud in the 2016 election, in which Trump won the Electoral College vote but lost the popular vote to Hillary Clinton.
"Those mythical 3 million illegal voters are the president's obsession, his white whale," said Bee. "Although if the whale were white, Trump would be a lot less concerned about it voting."
Vice President Mike Pence and Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach are heading up the commission, so Bee went through Kobach's history as well as discussing commission members Hans von Spakovsky and J. Christian Adams. "How the fuck do you go to Harvard, Yale and Oxford and come out a birther?" asked Bee, after quoting Kobach's questioning of Obama's citizenship. She spoke about voter suppression and how dangerous the commission could be if the result is American citizens being purged from the voter rolls.
Kobach, Adams and Spakovsky have been "methodically chipping away at the Voting Rights Act since the moment LBJ signed it," said Bee, adding that Trump has now "handed them the keys to the candy shop so they can run in and purge all the chocolates."
Bee added that she's finally solved the mystery of Trump's random friend "Jim" he keeps mentioning. "I think I can guess his last name," said Bee, putting up a photo of a Jim Crow poster.
Bee's second segment was mocking what she referred to as CSPAN's "open mic night," when GOP congressmen Louie Gohmert, Steve King and Dana Rohrabacher spoke to an empty House chamber.
Gohmert and King spoke about why they didn't think transgender military members should qualify for certain health benefits that, as Gohmert put it, would "cut 'em off or add some."
"If you're willing to put your life on the line for a country that talks about you like that, have the surgery, you earned it," Bee said emphatically.
The Full Frontal host had her graphics team put together "visual aids" to animate Gohmert and King's speeches, which Bee described as a "Western Civ oral presentation."
