Same reality: Demo to Fox, eyes on CBS

Fox emerged victorious in the adults 18-49 demographic last week, while CBS came out ahead in viewership, Nielsen Media Research said Tuesday.

Fox's triumph for the week ending Sunday came primarily from its original reality programming, while CBS' strength remained its repeats. Sunday's telecast of the Tonys, coming up against HBO's finale of "The Sopranos," dropped to a record low going back as far as at least 1992.

Monday began with a split between Fox in adults 18-49 and CBS in viewership. "Hell's Kitchen" (8.2 million, 3.7/10) remained firmly in command of the demo, while a repeat of "Two and a Half Men" (11.3 million, 3.3/9) was the night's top show in viewership. NBC found tough skating with Game 4 of the Stanley Cup Finals, which averaged 2.8 million and a 1.1/4.

Tuesday belonged to NBC with the return of "America's Got Talent" (13 million, 4.3/12) as well as "Deal or No Deal" (10.1 million, 2.7/9). Not faring so well were ABC's Alma Awards (3.5 million, 1.4/4) or Fox's troubled reality competition show "On the Lot" (3.2 million, 1.4/5).

Fox returned to win Wednesday with "So You Think You Can Dance" (10.3 million, 4.4/12), which beat ABC's "American Inventor" (7.9 million, 3.0/8) head-to-head. "Traveler" (5.3 million, 1.7/5) came in second place at 10 p.m., ahead of only Game 5 of the Stanley Cup Finals, which saw the Anaheim Ducks win the NHL championship over the Ottawa Senators and averaged 2.9 million viewers and a 1.3/4 in adults 18-49.

Fox made it two in a row on Thursday with "Are You Smarter Than a 5th Grader?" (9.3 million, 3.0/10) and "Dance" (11.1 million, 4.3/13). It dispatched both CBS' "Pirate Master" (6.2 million, 1.9/7) and the opener of the NBA Finals (9.2 million, 3.7/12), not to mention one of the final episodes of "Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip" (4.3 million, 1.7/5).

ABC and CBS tied in adults 18-49 on Friday with CBS' drama lineup against two originals on ABC, "National Bingo Night" (4.4 million, 1.3/4) and "20/20" (6 million, 1.8/6). Fox burned off an episode of the canceled "Standoff" (3.7 million, 1.1/4). Saturday went to Fox in the demo and CBS in viewership.

Sunday's broadcast primetime was overshadowed by the finale of "The Sopranos," on HBO that averaged 11.9 million viewers and had to affect CBS' Tonys telecast (6.2 million, 1.2/3). ABC won the night in the demo, with the San Antonio Spurs' win over the Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2 of the NBA Finals averaging 8.5 million viewers and a 3.4/10.

In the evening newscast ratings, ABC's "World News With Charles Gibson" logged another win in key demos with 7.7 million viewers and a 1.9/8 in the news demo of adults 25-54. "NBC Nightly News With Brian Williams" (7.4 million viewers, 1.8/8 in adults 25-54) and "CBS Evening News With Katie Couric" (6 million, 1.5/7) followed.

For the week, Fox averaged 6.1 million viewers and 2.4/8 in the adults 18-49 demo, followed by CBS (7.2 million, 1.8/6), ABC (5.7 million, 2.0/6), NBC (5.1 million, 1.7/5), the CW (2 million, 0.7/2) and MyNetworkTV (860,000, 0.3/1).
