San Sebastian Adds Competition Titles With Antonio Banderas, Others
Oscar-winning director Susanne Bier’s latest drama, A Second Chance, will compete at the 62nd San Sebastian International Film Festival, along with five other titles that organizers added to the competition lineup, known as the “Official Section,” on Wednesday.
The added films include one starring Antonio Banderas and another with a Game of Thrones actor, among others.
Bier will vie for the Golden Shell against Anahi Berneri’s Aire Libre, Maxime Giroux’s Felix and Meira, Cristian Jimenez’s La Voz en Off, Cedric Kahn’s Wild Life and Gabe Ibanez’s Automata.
Bier reteamed with Anders Thomas Jensen (In a Better World) to write A Second Chance, which looks at the blurred lines of decency and justice in extreme situations. The film stars Game of Thrones’ Nikolaj Coster-Waldau in his first Danish-language role in more than a decade.
Banderas stars in Ibanez’s sci-fi thriller Automata, which plays like a cross between a western and a detective movie. Berneri’s Aire Libre looks at the evolution of a relationship with no common roof to hold it together.
Giroux’s film focuses on star-crossed love between a Hasidic married woman and an eccentric pauper. Jimenez’s La Voz en Off tells of a woman’s efforts to disconnect from all her technology. Kahn’s Wild Life features a father’s wild attempt to keep his children after their mother gets custody following their divorce.
The six films join others announced earlier this month.
San Sebastian, Spain’s A-level festival runs Sept. 19-27 in the northern Basque region.
