Sandler steps up for sick Letterman

NEW YORK -- "Reign Over Me" star Adam Sandler filled in as host of "Late Show With David Letterman" on Tuesday after Letterman went home before the show's taping with a stomach bug.

Sandler was previously booked as the main guest on Tuesday show but agreed to host when Letterman fell ill, CBS said. Sandler's "Reign" co-star Don Cheadle, in town like Sandler for the movie's premiere at New York University, was called to fill in as a guest.

Previously scheduled guests race-car driver Danica Patrick and musician Lucinda Williams also appeared, as did comedian Todd Barry. Barry was also called to fill.

Letterman's illness isn't serious, and he is expected back for Monday's show. Wednesday's show was pre-taped, and Thursday's and Friday's shows are repeats with a later start because of the CBS telecast of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.
