Sara Bareilles has a bun in the oven in a new video for Waitress.
The singer-songwriter is currently starring in the musical that marked her Broadway debut as a composer and lyricist. She is making her Broadway acting debut in a 10-week run in the show's lead role through June 11, and her presence just yielded the Brooks Atkinson Theatre's highest-grossing eight-show week ($1.2 million) ever. The video footage below captures moments from her debut performance, featuring the duet "Bad Idea."
Directed by Diane Paulus, the musical adaptation of the 2007 indie film centers on Jenna, a pregnant, unhappily married diner waitress who hopes her extraordinary pies will open the door to a better life. It debuted on Broadway last March and received four Tony nominations, including one for Bareilles' music and lyrics. The cast recording also earned a Grammy nomination for best musical theater album.
Waitress is also the first-ever Broadway musical with an all-female creative team, adding in Jessie Nelson’s book and Lorin Latarro’s choreography. The musical is the best-selling show ever to play Broadway's Brooks Atkinson Theatre, grossing over $50 million in less than a year. The production will also kick off its national tour at Cleveland’s Playhouse Square this October.
