Richard Gere's 'Time Out of Mind' to Open Sarasota Film Festival
The closing night selection also has been announced.
Richard Gere's Time Out of Mind will open the 17th annual Sarasota Film Festival, it was announced Monday.
The film's director, Oren Moverman, also will receive the festival's hearts and minds of independent film award.
In Time Out of Mind, Gere plays a homeless man trying to restore his relationship with his estranged daughter, played by Jena Malone. IFC is set to release the film in September.
The closing night film is Brett Haley's I'll See You in My Dreams, starring Blythe Danner, Martin Starr, Sam Elliott, Malin Akerman, June Squibb, Rhea Perlman and Mary Kay Place. Danner will be in attendance, along with Haley, and is set to receive the festival's impact award.
I'll See You in My Dreams, which Haley also wrote and produced, stars Danner as a widow who's settled into her life until a series of events propels her into renewed engagement with the people and world around her. Bleecker Street is set to release the film in May.
"We're excited to have these two films to open and close our 17th installment,” Sarasota Film Festival president Mark Famiglio said in a statement. "Opening with a very dramatic performance by Richard Gere and closing with the elegant and clever Blythe Danner, the festival will have both touching and inspiring moments for all."
Director of programming Michael Dunaway added: “I’m thrilled to be able to showcase these two significant films for my first year at the festival. They place the Sarasota Film Festival in a competitive spotlight and tastefully frame our diverse lineup.”
The Sarasota Film Festival will run April 10-19. The festival's full lineup will be revealed next week.
