Scandi/Benelux Thriller ‘The Artist’ is Latest Attempt at Euro-Made Must-See TV
The five-part drama centers on a group of international artists who become entwined in a criminal conspiracy.
COLOGNE, Germany – Six European broadcasters have greenlit a new drama series aiming to follow in the wake of Danish crime hit The Killing and become must-see TV across the continent. The Artist from Belgium production house Caviar Films, follows a group of international artists all living in Copenhagen. When one of their members mysteriously disappears, they all become entwined in a cross-border thriller plot. Three commercial channels – Belgium’s Canvas, Dutch broadcaster VARA and Denmark’s TV3 – and three public channels – SVT in Sweden, Norway’s NRK and YLE of Finland – are backing the series.
Belgian director Hans Herbots will direct all five episodes of the first season. Among the cast are European stars including Denmark’s Thure Lindhardt (Angels and Demons), Belgium’s Johan Leysen (The American) and Norway’s Viktoria Winge (Max Manus).
Herbots has already begun shooting The Artist for delivery in 2012.
