National Geographic has promoted Betsy Scolnik to be its new president of digital media, the organization is set to announce Monday.

In her new position, Scolnik will oversee all of National Geographic Ventures' digital media and business initiatives, including NationalGeographic.com, the organization's digital film archive, shortform video programming, production and distribution and the Green Guide, a Web site and bimonthly newsletter.

NGV's acquisition of the Green Guide, which is geared toward providing consumers with information on how to lead a more environmentally-aware life, also is scheduled to be announced Monday.

"There is an explosion of opportunity for National Geographic to reach a global audience through a vast array of innovative digital media and Betsy brings a wide range of interactive content and operations experience tied to its emergence and growth," National Geographic Ventures president Tim Kelly said.

Scolnik, who replaces Chris McAndrews, first joined NGDM as vp content, in September 2005. During her tenure, Scolnik has overseen the redesign of NationalGeographic.com's homepage, the launch of National Geographic's podcasts and the recent relaunch of Kids.NationalGeographic.com.

"From the Green Guide and the World Music site to our wireless, video games and broadband entertainment projects, I look forward to advancing all of the National Geographic's digital-media initiatives to reach a broader audience nationally and abroad," Scolnik said.
