Sean Penn called Maria Conchita Alonso a “pig” and the former beauty queen responded by calling Penn a “communist a--hole” after the pair of actors ran into each other Sunday at Los Angeles International Airport.

Alonso disclosed the confrontation during a Monday interview with radio host Steve Malzberg on WMAL in Washington.

The argument pertained to politics, naturally, since the two disagree vehemently over socialist Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, whom Penn embraces and Alonso considers a ruthless leftist dictator.

Alonso, in fact, penned an open letter to Penn last year accusing him of hypocrisy and of accepting human-rights violations perpetrated by Chavez.

“Being born in Cuba, a country where freedom of speech is nonexistent, it’s startling to observe how Venezuela, where I was happily raised, is fast becoming Cuba’s mirror image: Dismantling of fundamental democratic rights deserved by its people and citizens of the world,” Alonso wrote in her published letter to Penn.

Since then, Alonso said she has heard stories of Penn spreading pro-Hugo “propaganda” on a movie set, so when she saw him Sunday at the baggage claim at LAX, where she was picking up her mother, she confronted him.

“Oh, it’s you,” Penn says, according to Alonso. “He goes, ‘I don’t wanna talk to you. You speak badly about me.”

“No I don’t,” Alonso responded. “I just say the truth. That you are a friend of Chavez and that he’s a good man. And that’s a lie. How can you do that?”

She said Penn accused her brother of trying to assassinate Chavez and that she said Penn also supports Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, which he denied.

“You’re a pig,” Penn says. “And you are a Communist, Sean Penn,” she responds.

She says things really got heated when she insinuated Penn’s deceased father, Leo Penn, a formerly blacklisted actor and director, was also a Communist.

“The second time I called him a Communist, I said, ‘You’re a Communist asshole,” Alonso said during her Monday radio interview. [Audio is below.]

“I was so angry and I had all this built inside me for so many years, and he calls me ‘a pig.’ I just exploded.”

“My mother was so happy, she wanted to clap,” Alonso says.

She said she called Penn a “Communist a--hole” a second time.

“I hope someone filmed it on their cell phones,” Alonso says. “The people were very quiet because it started not loud, but then it became loud.”

Before the interview ended, Alonso apologized for calling Penn an “a--hole.”

“I am apologizing for that word right now, here on your show,” she tells Malzberg. “I’m not apologizing for calling him a Communist, because that’s what he is.”

She adds that it’s “so sad that he is, because it’s hard for me to watch a movie that he’s in.”
