The event, which kicks off May 17, will screen 273 features, including 24 world premieres.

The Seattle International Film Festival will launch with a gala screening of Lynn Shelton’s Your Sister’s Sister on May 17 and conclude with a closing night screening of Stephen Gyllenhaal’s Grassroots, a comedy shot in Seattle starring Jason Biggs on June 10.

This year’s festival will screen 273 features and 187 shorts from 75 countries, selected from more than 5,676 submissions.The line-up includes 24 world, 25 North American and 16 U.S. premieres. There will be 180 features at this year’s festival arriving without U.S. distribution, and 85 films by female filmmakers, up from 62 last year.

This year has also seen the opening of the SIFF’s flagship Film Center headquarter in Seattle Center and the acquistion of the Uptown Cinemas. “This is the first time in SIFF’s history that we will have the opportunity to show films on multiple screens in a single location allowing us to present the most wide-ranging and diverse selection of films possible,” SIFF artistic director Carl Spence said.

Screening as the Centerpiece Gala will be the North American premiere of Daniel Cohen’s culinary comedy The Chef, starring Jean Reno.

Additional Gala Presentations include Fat Kids Rules the World, directed by Matthew Lillard; Robot and Frank, Jack Schreier; Lola Versus, Daryl Wein; As Luck Would Have It, Alex de la Iglesia; Starbuck, Ken Scott; Gayby, Jonathan Lisecki; and The Details, Jacob Aaron Eastes.

Screening as special presentations are Pixar’s Brave, directed by Brenda Chapman and Mark Andrews; Diaz – Don’t Clean Up This Blood, directed by Daniele Vicari; The Last Reef 3D, directed by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas; People Like Us, directed by Alex Kurtzman; and Trishna, directed by Michael Winterbottom.
