Disney's 'Secret of the Wings' Tops 'Magic Mike' on Blu-Ray, DVD Charts

 

Walt Disney Studios’ Secret of the Wings debuted at No. 1 on both national sales charts the week ending Oct. 28, while the latest Tyler Perry release from Lionsgate was the week’s top rental.

Secret, the latest made-for-video release in the enormously successful “Disney Fairies” franchise, features an all-star cast of voice talent, from Timothy Dalton to Lucy Liu, and also bears the distinction of being the first-ever home video premiere on Blu-ray 3D. The three prior installments in the franchise, which was launched in 2008 with Tinker Bell, all have been huge hits, selling millions of copies on both DVD and Blu-ray Disc.

Secret of the Wings beat out Warner’s Magic Mike for the No. 1 position on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks overall disc sales, as well as Nielsen’s dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart.

Magic Mike, the male stripper movie that grossed $113.7 million in U.S. theaters, bowed at No. 2 on both charts.

The two new releases replaced DreamWorks’ Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted as the top-selling disc. The animated family film slid to No. 3 on First Alert and No. 4 on the Blu-ray Disc sales chart, behind a third new release, 20th Century Fox’s Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, which debuted at No. 4 on First Alert. Vampire Hunter, a fantasy about the 16th President discovering vampires are trying to take over the country, was a theatrical underperformer, earning just $37.5 million in theaters against a budget estimated at $69 million.

On Home Media Magazine’s rental chart, meanwhile, the latest Tyler Perry comedy, Madea’s Witness Protection, bowed at No. 1, bumping Sony Pictures’ That’s My Boy to No. 2. Madea’s Witness Protection grossed $65.6 million in theaters and was available everywhere, unlike Magic Mike and Abraham Lincoln, which won’t be available through Netflix or Redbox for another three weeks.
