See The Tesla Street Race Videos Taking YouTube by Storm
The amateur videos, which have racked up hundreds of thousands of views, pit Tesla's latest Model S sedan against supercars from Ferrari and Lamborghini — sometimes with surprising results.
Ever since Tesla rolled out its Model S P85D — a 691-horsepower version of the Model S sedan with separate motors powering the front and rear wheels — YouTube has abounded with footage of street races pitting the all-electric "D" against exalted gasoline-fueled supercars like the Lamborghini Aventador or Ferrari Maranello — with the Tesla often prevailing by embarrassing margins.
The latest matches the Tesla P85D with its stablemate, a standard P85 Model S. It's a bit of a mismatch — the "D" has all-wheel drive and 271 more horses. But it’s instructive to watch the P85D's brute performance: zero to 60 in 3.2 seconds, the provenance of supercars, not seven-passenger electric sedans.

"This car is nuts — it's like having your own personal roller coaster," Tesla CEO Elon Musk said at the P85D's unveiling in October in Los Angeles. Those who have driven the car tend to agree.
"The acceleration," commented one of the YouTube racers, "is at the border between fun and frightening."
