Hairstylist Benjamin Mohapi’s Benjamin with Negin Zand has already built a solid reputation as one of the city’s go-to destinations for covetable hair -- just ask clients Cat Deeley, Kelly Osbourne, Carey Mulligan and Diane Lane. Now the Melrose salon ups the beauty ante with the debut of the adjoining Selects Apothecary beauty boutique, the brainchild of co-founders Mohapi and Genevieve Lynch.

Boasting a range of cult favorites and under-the-radar beauty brands, the boutique is a product Mecca for beauty aficionados and dabblers alike. Lynch, a former dancer and Toronto native, opened jewelry store Vieve in the space in 2009, then repurposed the location as a warehouse for a candle manufacturing company. In April 2013, the concept for the Selects boutique (8908 Melrose Ave., West Hollywood; 424-249-3296) was born.

“I was a dancer growing up and it’s all about keeping yourself up. Makeup and hair are very involved,” says Lynch of her longtime passion for beauty which has manifested itself in the worldly selection of products, nurtured by her travels as a performer, when she would seek out unusual beauty finds around the world. “It’s really about the travels I did between the ages of 16 and 23,” says Lynch.

The result is a one-stop shop offering a carefully curated selection of brands that appeals to a wide range of buyers -- from men to expectant moms, organic beauty buffs and even the most discerning product devotee. California labels such as plant-based Earth Tu Face share the spotlight alongside Swedish skincare and perfume line Yvonne Ryding, must-haves such as Neroli Infused Marula Oil from African Botanics and handcrafted brushes from German brand Burstenhaus Redecker.

The boutique has its own storefront on Melrose but also connects to the salon, encouraging hair patrons to discover the offerings at the end of their appointments. Now that’s pretty perfect.
