Seth MacFarlane to Revive 'The Flintstones' for Fox

The "Family Guy" creator will update the classic cartoon for a 2013 launch.

Seth MacFarlane is getting into the Flintstones business.

"One of the first things that I drew when I was 2 years old was Fred Flintstone," MacFarlane told a roomful of ad buyers gathered in New York on Monday for the Fox upfront presentation.

While much will remain the same about the cartoon that aired in primetime on ABC from 1960-66, the creator of Family Guy and The Cleveland Show says some updates will be necessary: "What's the animal version of the iPod? That's the kind of thing we have to think about," he told an enthusiastic audience.

Fox Entertainment chief Kevin Reilly said the series came together in the past couple of days and will begin production shortly. The Flintstones will premier on Fox in 2013.

"Fox has long been home to iconic families like the Simpsons and the Griffins, so I have no doubt that the Flintstones and the Rubbles are going to fit right in on our air," Reilly said.

The series will be jointly produced by 20th Television and Warner Bros. Television, which owns the right to the original Hanna-Barbera cartoon. Dan Palladino (Gillmore Girls) and Kara Vallo (Family Guy) will executive produce with MacFarlane.

The announcement follows recent animated orders for Allen Gregory and Napoleon Dynamite, which will roll out in the fall and midseason, respectively.
