Seth Meyers Bluntly Tells Bernie Sanders Supporters "We Don’t Have Time for This"
The 'Late Night' host didn't hold back in telling hardcore "Bernie or Bust" protestors what was at stake if the Democrats didn't unite against Donald Trump.
Seth Meyers on Tuesday was unusually blunt with Bernie Sanders supporters still holding out on uniting behind Hillary Clinton as the Democrats' presidential nominee, telling those behind the "Bernie or Bust" movement that "we don't have time for this."
Meyers spoke directly to Sanders supporters who refuse to back Clinton and booed her name on the floor of the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, telling them, "I know you’re ‘Bernie or Bust,’ but the results are in, and ‘Bust’ won. We don’t have time for this.”
Reiterating the sense of urgency and, for Meyers, the impending doom of a Donald Trump presidency, he said, "The house is on fire. Stop crying because we’re not putting it out with your hose." Meyers described Trump as a "racist demagogue" and admonished Sanders supporters who ignored the lessons of history when men like the real estate mogul were elected. He warned hardcore Sanders fans that the country was "48 percent crazy uncle at Thanksgiving" who were likely to vote Trump.
The taped clip was posted to YouTube and Meyers' Twitter account hours before Tuesday night's edition of Late Night With Seth Meyers aired, suggesting the talk show host was keen to spread the message as wide as possible rather than to just the narrower audience watching at 12.35 a.m.
Meyers also commended Sanders himself for holding his nose and backing Clinton for the greater good and imploring his supporters to do the same. He added humorously: “We’ve all experienced disappointment. I couldn’t get Rihanna to go out with me, but I don’t stand in the kitchen and boo my wife.”
Meyers ended the segment by praising the fervor and energy of the Sanders campaign, saying, "Your passion changed the Democratic Party and that is no small thing. You should be proud of yourselves for his campaign," before finishing with the exhortation, "but also, you have to be quiet now! Now is the time to be quiet!”
