Bollywood Star Shah Rukh Khan Faces Baby Gender Test Probe
The actor has not yet commented on reports that he and his wife are expecting a baby boy, but tests to determine a baby's gender before birth are illegal in India.
NEW DELHI -- Top Bollywood star Shah Rukh Khan is facing an inquiry by government health officials following reports that the actor and his wife, Gauri Khan, are expecting a male child through surrogacy.
According to Indian law, tests to determine a baby's gender before birth are illegal.
The Indian Radiological and Imaging Association (IRIA) has written to the health department of the state of Maharashtra (Khan lives in Mumbai, its capital) “to find out how the actor came to know about the unborn child’s sex when sex determination is illegal in India,” IRIA coordinator Jignesh Thakkar told a newspaper. “If news reports are true, then it is clear that celebrities can get away with breaking the law,” he added.
According to reports, Maharashtra state health minister Suresh Shetty said he had instructed his officials to conduct the inquiry.
Khan -- who has two children, son Aryan, 16, and daughter Suhana, 13 -- has not yet commented on the issue. The 47-year-old actor recently launched the trailer of his upcoming film, director Rohit Shetty's Chennai Express, co-produced by Disney-UTV and Khan's banner Red Chillies Entertainment.
India has a high female foeticide rate due to a traditional preference for boys in the country, which has led to a skewed sex ratio in various states. According to research by the medical journal Lancet, 500,000 girls are lost annually through sex-selective abortions in India.
