Shakira Album Release Party: Talks New Music, Love and Having 86 Million Facebook Friends
Shakira's fans got to see the pop star up close during an intimate album release party for the singer's new music, which goes on sale today.
Hosted by Ryan Seacrest, the 30-minute live-streamed show yesterday at the iHeartRadio Theater in Burbank included performances of several new songs and the 2006 hit "Hips Don't Lie." The Colombian songstress opened up about her writing process, falling in love and having the most Facebook followers in the world with 86 million and counting.
"I just got the enormous news that [my Facebook page] is the No. 1 most followed in the world and I just can't believe it," Shakira said while being interviewed on stage. "I don't understand why, really. I always wanted to have friends."
The party was presented by Target, which also has the exclusive deluxe edition of the album, including the tracks "La La La," "Chasing Shadows" and "That Way."
Shakira performed "Can't Remember to Forget You," "Empire," "23" and "You Don't Care About Me" during the showcase, but it was perhaps her relationship with Gerard Pique that elicited the most cheers from her fans after Seacrest asked Shakira about dating the younger man who was 23 when they first met and who also provides the title to one of her newest songs.
"We try to have quality time," Shakira said. "We're very touchy, touchy. We like to be all over each other … love is practice."
Shakira, who said she began writing music at 8, is also a perfectionist.
"Usually someone has to stop me … I'm so involved with every single aspect of my music from the arrangements for the writing and production. I just feel like these are my children, each of these songs. These were the most eventful 2 1/2 years of my life: a baby, a new love, The Voice. So many great things have happened."
Shakira, whose best-selling album is Laundry Service, has been No. 1 seven times on Billboard's Social 50 chart. She has had four top 10s on the Hot 100, including "Whenever, Wherever," "Underneath Your Clothes," "Hips Don't Lie" and "Beautiful Liar" (with Beyonce). She has had five No. 1s on Top Latin Albums; her longest-running No. 1s include Donde Estan Los Ladrones (11 weeks, 1998), Fijacion Oral: Vol. 1 (17 weeks, 2005), and Sale el Sol (12 weeks, 2010).
Shakira concedes that choosing a musical career back when she started was tough and "not a path of roses," but if her son Milan wants to make music someday, "I think he would have it easier."
Back in the day, Shakira said, "I had to go to every single radio station with my album under my arm in the most obscure places."
