News Corp.'s Star network has promoted executives Uday Shankar and Jagdish Kumar to CEO and COO, respectively.

The announcement Thursday was made by Hong Kong-based Star CEO Paul Aiello, who was serving as interim CEO of Star India following the January departure of senior executives Peter Mukerjea, CEO Star Group India, and Sameer Nair, CEO of STAR Entertainment India (HR 1/22). Both positions were subsequently discontinued.

Mumbai-based Shankar joined Star India as COO in May from the network's news broadcasting joint venture Media Content & Communications Services, where he had been CEO for three years. MCCS is a joint venture between Indian media group Ananda Bazar Patrika Group and Star, which runs Hindi news channel Star News.

Following his promotion to Star India CEO, Shankar will now be responsible for Star's overall business in India, reporting to Aiello.

Kumar, currently Star senior vp finance, based in Hong Kong, will join Star India as COO and relocate to Mumbai. He will report to Shankar, "working closely with him in optimizing operational efficiencies and driving the company's growth agenda," according to a statement.

"Uday's promotion is a recognition of the important contributions he has made to the growth and strategic development of Star India since he joined the company," Aiello said.
