Shannen Doherty Shaves Head During Ongoing Cancer Battle
"You know, you worry most about the people that you love, and about making sure that they're gonna be OK," the actress has said of her disease.
Shannen Doherty has a brand-new look. And it's brave and beautiful.
The actress, who has been battling cancer, is now sporting a closely cropped 'do presumably inspired by her ongoing treatments to fight the disease. Doherty, 45, documented the makeover on Instagram (posted below) on Tuesday night in a series of photos showing the stages from cutting to shaving her hair while surrounded by her mother, Rosa, and friend Anne Kortright-Shilstat.
Doherty first revealed that she was battling breast cancer in August 2015, telling People magazine that she was undergoing treatment. "I am continuing to eat right, exercise and stay very positive about my life," said Doherty. "I am thankful to my family, friends and doctors for their support and, of course, my fans who have stood by me."
She elaborated on that treatment during a February 2016 episode of Dr. Oz, saying that she planned to have one of two surgery options, including a mastectomy if that's what her doctors ordered. It's unclear what surgery she underwent, but Doherty seemed grounded in her perspective on life with cancer. "Ultimately, they're just breasts, right?" she said. "I mean, I love them, they're mine, they're beautiful, but in the grand scheme of things, I would rather be alive and I would rather grow old with my husband [Kurt Iswarienko]."
After the makeover, Doherty's model pal Kortright-Shilstat posted words of encouragement on her own Instagram post: "I couldn't be prouder of you today. Your strength and courage is so inspiring and I am so very lucky to have you in my life. Thank you for blindly trusting me today to help you with such a big step. I will forever be there for you no matter what. #f—cancer"
