Sharples steps down at Endemol

MD resignation part of a region-wide reorganization

HONG KONG -- Edward Sharples, managing director for Southeast Asia is to step down as part of a region-wide reorganization at Endemol, the "Big Brother" TV production house.

The company will focus all its Asian businesses on Hong Kong, with all local heads reporting directly to Hong Kong-based CEO Arjen van Mierlo. Hong Kong also becomes the head office for local SE Asia operations, replacing Sharples's Bangkok base.

In addition to SE Asia, Endemol has local development and production companies in India and Malaysia, which are involved in several local shows. The company has also licensed several of its formats in China and Korea.

"This new structure will strongly position us to further leverage our existing operations in Hong Kong, India and Malaysia whilst pursuing further expansion in Asia, including Korea, Japan and Greater China," van Mierlo said in a statement. "At the same time we are extremely sad to be losing Ed who launched the SE Asian operation from scratch and built it into a leading content provider to the region."

Sharples joined Endemol SE Asia in 2004.
