'Simpsons' block, 'Dateline' split Sun. spoils

NEW YORK -- Two hours of "The Simpsons" in advance of the opening of the movie Friday gave Fox a demo win in Sunday's primetime, while "Dateline NBC" gave the peacock a victory in viewers.

A new episode of "Big Brother" (6.4 million, 2.4/8) tied with a repeat "Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" (6.7 million, 2.4/8) for the lead at 8 p.m. in adults 18-49, according to preliminary estimates released Monday by Nielsen Media Research. An hour of "The Simpsons" (5.1 million, 2.3/7) came out ahead of the second hour of "Dateline," though "Dateline NBC" averaged 8.4 million viewers at 8 p.m.

But "The Simpsons" (6.3 million, 3.0/9) prevailed at 9 p.m. in the demo against second place "Cold Case" (6.4 million, 1.8/5) plus "Law & Order" (6.6 million, 1.7/5) and ABC's "Desperate Housewives" (3.6 million, 1.3/4), all repeats. NBC won at 10 p.m. with "Law & Order: SVU" (6.8 million, 1.9/6) against "Shark" (5.3 million, 1.3/4) and "Brothers & Sisters" (3 million, 1.0./3).

At 7 p.m., the first hour of "Dateline" earned a 1.4/5 to win in the demo while "60 Minutes" (7.3 million, 1.2/5) won in viewership.

Sunday averages: NBC (6.8 million, 1.8/6); CBS (6.4 million, 1.7/5); Fox (4.5 million, 2.1/7); ABC (4.3 million, 1.5/5); and the CW (1.4 million, 0.5/2).
