'Singin' in the Rain' to Splash Down on Broadway
Weinstein Live Entertainment is teaming with Theatre du Chatelet to bring the Paris production based on the beloved Gene Kelly musical to New York in 2016.
Following the trajectory of last season's Tony-winning hit, An American in Paris, another beloved Gene Kelly movie-musical will make the jump to Broadway next year when Singin' in the Rain comes to town.
Weinstein Live Entertainment, the theatrical division of the Weinstein Co., is teaming on the project with the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, where the production originated in a sold-out 15-performance run in 2014. It recently reopened there for a return engagement through Jan. 17.
The show is based on the classic 1952 film about the difficult transition of a silent film production company to talkies, which starred Kelly alongside Debbie Reynolds and Donald O'Connor. The movie was co-directed by Stanley Donen and Kelly, with a screenplay by the Broadway team of Betty Comden and Adolph Green.
The stage production is directed by Robert Carsen, who previously mounted Candide and My Fair Lady at the Chatelet. Choreography is by Stephen Mears (Mary Poppins).
"Theatre du Chatelet's productions have long been internationally recognized for their high quality and progressive interpretations," said Harvey Weinstein. "This production is simply spectacular — it at last does justice to one of America's greatest films."
An investor in a number of major Broadway shows, Weinstein got his feet wet for the first time as lead producer last season on Finding Neverland, which has been running since March at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre, with cumulative grosses to date of $36.1 million.
The Theatre du Chatelet, which is headed by Jean-Luc Choplin, proved a viable tryout stop in 2014 for An American in Paris. That show also began performances on Broadway in March this year, and has grossed $45.9 million to date. The production was nominated for 12 Tony Awards, winning four — for choreography, scenic design, lighting and orchestrations.
An exact venue, dates, cast and additional creative team for Singin' in the Rain are to be announced, along with details of international touring plans.
Previous attempts to develop a stage musical based on Singin' in the Rain have included a Twyla Tharp-directed dance-driven production that ran for almost a year on Broadway during the 1985-86 season. A different version debuted to rave reviews in the U.K. at the Chichester Festival Theatre in summer 2011 and transferred to London's West End the following year.
